The Craske Cup Final

The Mission take on Bradenham A in the 2015/16 final held at Scarning Village Hall

Robin Thaxter & Paul Barrett vs Serafim Melo & Roland Marton

Both sides began the final slightly defensively but Bradenham courtesy of a Serafim smash managed to pull away from 6-6 to 6-8 all for Robin and Paul to turn it on and claim the next 5 points to win the opening set. The Mission kicked off the second set where they left the first bursting into a 7-0 lead. Serafim got Bradenham off the mark with a fantastic low attack but later had Paul attack both of his serves to go 10-2 in front. The Mission claimed the second set 11-4. The third started with the best rally of the fledgling match. Both sides defending and attacking well before Paul put one past Serafim. Bradenham took the advantage before 2 winning serves from Robin tied the set at 6-6. Bradenham claimed the set 7-11 with Roland attacking for the victory. The fourth opened with another long and enjoyable rally, this time it was Serafim to strike to claim the point. Bradenham hauled into a 1-5 lead, despite The Mission narrowing the gap, Serafim and Roland held on to a 2/3 point lead throughout to take the opener into a deciding set. Unlike any of the games that came before, Robin and Paul walked the decider 11-2 no less help than to Pauls great blocking of Serafims attacks.

The Mission 1-0 Bradenham A

Jon Hancock & Paul Barrett vs Allan Nicholls & Roland Marton

Another tense 5 setter. Allan and Roland defended exceptionally well to help open a 4 point gap (4-8). Allan then gave Bradenham 5 match points with a loaded loop, Bradenham won the first set 6-11. The Mission shot out of the blocks in set 2 building up a 5-1 lead which Bradenham couldn't recover from. Paul seemed at ease attacking Rolands serves to help win the second 11-5. Set 3 saw Jon's opening serves fool Allan to give The Mission a 2-0 'headstart'. Like set 2, The Mission open up a 5-1 lead and manage to maintain the gap with Pauls strike putting The Mission 2-1 in front. The fourth set saw a complete swing in form, Bradenham walking out convincing winners 3-11. Highlight being Allans persistent looping and looping again to Jon proved 1 too many. Fifth and final (or is it?) A reign of confusion struck a number of the players when umpire called "Ends" when Bradenham took a 3-5 lead. The Mission fight to go 8-6 in front and Roland later attacks level the scoreline at 8-8. Then tied at 9-9, Allan's serves well to Paul to aid Bradenham in the 9-11 win.

The Mission 1-1 Bradenham A

Robin Thaxter vs Serafim Melo Serafim began comfortably by opening up at 1-5 advantage. Whenever it appeared as through Robin was clawing the deficit, Serafim pulled away again with some blistering flat hits. 6-11 it ended to the Bradenham man. A change of tactic from Robin saw him target his aggressive chops to Serafims backhand which helped him claim an 11-5 win. A composed Robin again keep Serafims attacking opportunities to a minimum and claimed the third 11-7. A tense nail bitter for the fourth set saw each man match for points through to 8-8. Some fine resolute defending from Robin saw him edge ahead 9-8 but Serafim fought back with the next 2 points to give himself a set point on his serve. Fault... Tie break. After the disappointment of handing back a set point, Serafim fought again to take this to a decider 10-12. Another close affair saw the score at 3-3 but 2 Robin defensive shots took him to 5-3 then after ends, 2 Robin attacks (yes, attacks!) took him 2 further in front. The gap was too big for Serafim to make up and Robin saw out the game 11-5. It was commented that "Robins superior fitness saw him through the game", thanks for your input Jon!

The Mission 2-1 Bradenham A

Paul Barrett vs Allan Nicholls

A cracking open and attacking match. It looked for the whole world the Paul was set to claim the first set with 5 set points, but Allan expertly won point after point to take the opener into a tie break. After a short to and froing to 12-12 Allan pushed forward to claim the opener 12-14. Allan continued putting the pressure on Paul to open up a 4 point gap at 1-5 and then extended to 3-9. Paul fought hard to close the gap but to no avail as Allan ran out 7-11 winner. After 4 points in the third set it looked as though Allan could be on for winning it in 3, but Paul dug in and levelled the set at 5-5. It was then cat and mouse until 8-8 where Paul pushed forward to win 3 straight points and pull a set closer to the Bradenham man. The fourth set had numerous switches in momentum unlike the previous games on the night. Allan held the upper hand early on taking a 1-3 and 2-4 lead. Paul then surged to go 6-4 and 7-5 in front. Allan gained the upper hand against Pauls serve with a brilliant loop levelling up at 7-7. That loop started the final sprint with Allan running out the 8-11 victor.

The Mission 2-2 Bradenham A

Jon Hancock vs Roland Marton

Jon's patient play to contain Rolands aggressive attack paid off in the first set. Jon led from start to finish and his choice of when to attack himself was spot on, 11-5. The tide appeared to be swaying as Roland with 2 good serves took a 0-2 lead, but Jon replied with the same for himself. The set remained on serve until Jon pulled away at 6-4 and managed to maintain a 2 point cushion. At 8-6, Rolands relentless attacking finally saw Jon beaten but The Mission man brushed it off and continued to claim the second set 11-9. Jon partly reverted to how he managed in the opening set to see this out in 3 straight with an 11-8 victory.

The Mission 3-2 Bradenham A

Robin Thaxter vs Allan Nicholls This match proved to be a finely balanced affair, the first set of which remained perfectly on par until 8-8 when Allan pulled out an impressive smash to set him up to take the final 3 points and an 8-11 victory. Another similarly close set opened with Robins precise attacking to the left corner saw him 2-0 up. Allan responded straight away, 2-2, then like the first set they were level up to 8-8 before Allan took control and ran out 8-11 winner again. Paul pointed out to his team mate "if it was first to 8, you'd be 2-0 up". Another close one and similar scoreline, this time however a bit of back and forth on the scoreboard. Robin managed to pull off into a 5-3 lead but for Allan to win 4 straight points to go 5-7 ahead. Allan minded the gap well to again claim an 8-11 win.

The Mission 3-3 Bradenham A

Jon Hancock vs Serafim Melo

Serafim started well and made Jon make some mistakes where sarcasm followed "ohh, that was near" the call from The Mission man. Serafim found it able to build a 4 point advantage continuous cut down by 2, then extended by 2 until he won the opener 8-11. The second set was very close, with the score staying on serve until at 8-8 Serafim managed to win consecutive points on Jons serve to obtain 2 set points on serve. The first of which he faulted and allowed Jon to neutralise the set points and then get one of his own 11-10. Out of the hat, Serafim pulled (not a rabbit) but 3 straight points to go 2 sets up. Another tight one, both players remained level until Serafim went 5-7 ahead. He continued to maintain the lead until he had 3 match points, 7-10. Jon responded very well with a well hit loop to bring it back to 8-10 and went on again to make it 9-10, but on Jons serve Serafim snuck the winner to put Bradenham 1 match away from the Craske Cup.

The Mission 3-4 Bradenham A

Paul Barrett vs Roland Marton

Attack vs attack the order of this match. Paul raced into a 3-1 lead to be halted be a resurgent Roland who won 8 from the next 10 points to go 5-9 ahead. The second swing began with Paul putting in 2 good serves, followed by 2 great returns, followed by 2 more good serves to win the first set 11-9. The was no swing of points in set 2, where Roland took control from the first point to the last and comfortably claimed it 5-11. Another fast start from Paul who appeared to take control of the third set (5-1) with the help of 2 nets which appeared to affect Roland, but appear is only that it did, Roland pull together consecutive points to gain the advantage 6-8. 2 good serves from Paul levelled the set at 8-8 but Roland responded with 2 big smashes to give him 2 set points. Paul pulled one back only to fault serve and give Roland the 3rd set. A tense set for different reasons as Paul was fighting to keep The Mission in the final and Roland pushing to win it for Bradenham A. 2 early attacks one from each player kept the scores level. A net and smash enabled Paul to move 2 ahead at 6-4, but Roland responded well to draw level again at 7-7. At 9-9, on Rolands serve, he managed to attacked both returns to win much to the delight of his Bradenham team mates.

The Mission 3-5 Bradenham A

A cracking match enjoyed by the players and spectators at Scarning Village Hall and a fine conclusion to the regular season.

Congratulations to Bradenham A for winning the Craske Cup

The Angel Handicap Cup Final

Bradenham C take on Scarning D in the 2015/16 final held at Swanton Morley Village Hall

Dave Charles vs Dale Curry

Dave surrendered a 15 point lead but opened the match winning the first 8 points which set him on his way to a 21-17 first set victory. With a pep talk from the Scarning contingent, Dale came out with a more positive attacking mindset in sets 2 and 3 which saw Scarning D across the line in match 1, 18-21 and 16-21.

Bradenham C 0-1 Scarning D

Peter Hopking vs Ollie Thompson-Hall

Ollie began with an 11 point advantage but it wasn't long before the effects of Peters pimpled rubber took toll on Ollies attack. Peter tied level at 14-14 before continuing to claim the first set 21-18. The second set ended in the same outcome, the major difference this time was Peters serve where he claimed 12 points from his 14 serves.

Bradenham C 1-1 Scarning D

Phil Waity vs George Howling

Phil this time had the 15 point deficit to make up. George, however, had different plans coming out all guns blazing he fired home to a 12-21 first set victory. Set 2 saw Phil return Georges serves excellently allowing George only 3 points (out of 15) on his serve. The set went to a tie break which Phil attacked with a beautifully placed forehand loop to tie the game. Set 3 saw Phil claim the victory for Bradenham in another close encounter, 21-19 this time courtesy of Phils expertly executed spin serves.

Bradenham C 2-1 Scarning D

Peter Hopking vs Dale Curry

Episode 2 - The Return of the Pimples.. For the second time, Scarning D were unable to fully understand the effects of Peters pimpled bat and Peter ran out the 21-19 winner in both sets.

Bradenham C 3-1 Scarning D

Dave Charles vs George Howling

George starting on 15 gave Dave no time to think by attacking to win the opening 2 points to take a 17-0 lead and then managed to claim all 4 points on Daves serve to win the shortest set of the night 3-21. A more dogged performance from Dave in the second set who fought hard to nullify Georges youthful exuberance to win it 21-17. The third set appeared to be going the same way as the second as Dave clawed back the deficit with 9 of the opening 10 points but at 19-20 George caught an edge to claim the win.

Bradenham C 3-2 Scarning D

Phil Waity vs Ollie Thompson-Hall

Phil this time facing a 12 point uphill task didn't do himself any favours at the beginning of the first set by allowing Ollie to attack to share the 8 opening points taking him into a 4-16 lead. By this point Phil started to find his rhythm pulling it close on 16-19 with Ollie to serve. Ollies improving serves and follow up attacks saw him claim the 2 points he need to win 19-21. In complete contrast to how the opening set panned out, Phil seemed on fire in bringing the score level at 16 all. Perhaps a mental block stuck at this key moment which allowed Ollie to capitalise with 5 of the next 6 points to win 17-21 and level the match.

Bradenham C 3-3 Scarning D

Peter Hopking vs George Howling

Episode 3 - The Pimples Strike Back.. Like Ollie and Dale who came before, George also struggled against Peters pimples but for the second of the 3 sets where everything George was hitting troubled Peter. Despite Peters incredible defensive play, he couldn't do anything about Georges 8-21 win, but likewise George couldn't do much about Peters first and third set 21-17 wins.

Bradenham C 4-3 Scarning D

Phil Waity vs Dale Curry

For Phils third flip-of-a-coin close match of the evening saw him exquisitely claw the points difference back before being out hit the Scarning D man. Phils controlled defensive play slashed the gap to 14-16 in no time at all. As the scores levelled at 19-19, the tide appeared in Phils favour but an exceptional block from Dale against one of Phils big looping attacks set him on route to a 20-21 opening win. The second set saw Dale edge closer to levelling the match at 4-4 no less help than a great rally at 12-18 which saw Dale pin Phil well back beyond the table to 3 consecutive smashes before Phil found it impossible to return again. Then, at 13-19, Dale received the courtesy assistance of the net to claim 7 match points. 7 points later it was 20-20 and Dale managed to hold firm and attack Phil into a mistake.

Bradenham C 4-4 Scarning D

Dave Charles vs Ollie Thompson-Hall Fighting against Ollies 13 point head start caused troubles for Dave in the first set. Ollie claimed 8 of the 15 points to win the opener 7-21. One of the key points was Ollie (unusually) defending Daves attacks at 5-16 and managed to make Dave play 1 extra shot 1 too many times. The early stages of the second set were dominated by Dave but Ollies persistence and wide attacking gave the youngsters of Scarning D the deciding set to win The Angel Handicap Cup 5-4.

Bradenham C 4-5 Scarning D

A really well contested final which went right down to the wire in an evening enjoyed by both sides and those that came to watch.

Congratulations to Scarning D for winning The Angel Handicap Cup

Week 13 Results - Craske Cup

Round 2 -

Swanton Morley F 0-9 St Faiths

As expected, St Faiths didn’t have too much trouble, always able to find that extra gear when threatened, despite both the Andrews carrying an injury.  Still, we all enjoyed the match, completing all 9 games, and still finishing early enough for the St Faiths’ lads to get down the local hostelry!!

Swanton Morley B 2-7 Bradenham A

Played a month ahead of schedule, Bradenham A claimed a 7-2 victory to set up a Quarter final against their 'D' side.

Scarning A 4-5 Bradenham C

A very close and tense affair at Scarning Village Hall with 6 of the 9 games being decided in the fifth set. Steve Clubb's 'Man of the Match' performance set the 2 teams apart winning both of his singles. This victory sees Bradenham C take on Bradenham B in the Quarter Finals.

Guestwick 9-0 Yaxham

An unscheduled Angel Handicap Cup match was played on Tuesday 1st December at Scarning Village Hall:

Scarning D 5-4 The Mission

Unavailability and illness resulted in Scarning D secretary Paul Baudinet standing in on the night to aid the victorious youngsters Oliver Thompson-Hall and Dale Curry. The night did not begin well for the visitors with Ollie and Dale claiming wins in their first matches of the evening, but after 6 played the score was tied at 3-3. Dale stepped up to claim his well deserved maximum followed by Paul getting his first to win the night before Ollie and Robin Thaxter battled out 3 very close sets to make it 5-4.

DDTTL Fixture List

Hi all,

It has been bought to my attention that the DDTTL handbook fixture list does not correspond to the fixtures online and previously emailed to team captains.

Please be assured that the fixtures on the website and those previously emailed or posted are correct.

In my haste to get the handbooks sent to the printers I managed to put fixture list 'version 1' into it (and subsequently checked the list against 'version 1'), not the final version. I will create a new insert for your handbooks this week.

Apologies for the confusion and any inconvenience caused.

DDTTL 2015 Annual Championships

The Dereham & District Table Tennis League 2015 Annual Championships saw 40 competitors descend on the Dereham Leisure Centre over 2 nights to fulfil the 5 event/135 match schedule.

The opening night (4th April) saw the completion of 73 matches, leaving 62 for the finals night on Wednesday 11th April.

Open Singles – Serafim Melo retained his crown overcoming Paul Barrett in the final for the second year running.

Open Doubles – Paul and Steve Barrett triumphed through a very difficult half of the draw, beating Howard Lupton/Robin Thaxter, Dave Charles/Richard Norman, Dave Attridge/Serafim Melo then Rob Land/Chris Anema in the final.

Division 2 Singles – League newcomers Nick Galley and Mike Thornton contested the final with Nick coming out on top despite his hectic evening of matches.

Handicap Singles – Phil Waity battled extremely hard to get through to the final clawing back numerous large point deficits. In the final however, Robin Thaxter proved too strong for Phil.

Vets Singles – The all ‘Mission’ affair saw Robin Thaxter claim his second victory of the evening against team mate Steve Barrett in an enthralling 4 set match.

The event organisers would like to thank everyone for the incredible turnout and the generosity to those that arrived early to help set up and stayed late to pack up.

Pictures of the nights will be in our online gallery in the coming weeks.
